S = Collaborative and reciprocal community engagement in response to an authentic need

Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.

This weekend I volunteered at Asia Society's PAC World Premiere event. I coordinated with Amal Hassan, the organization's Performing Arts and Culture Programs Manager. Since I was the only volunteer that showed up, I was tasked with doing everything to make sure the event went smoothly. In the beginning, I greeted guests at the front door and reminded them to check in at the front desk. It was a smaller crowd from the night prior, about 30 guests total. During the performance, I ushered the people into the auditorium and watched the show myself to make sure there were no technical difficulties.

It was a riveting presentation of identity in America from an Asian daughter's point of view. Some of the themes and takeaways I had from the show were relatable, as I understand on some level the difficulty in choosing either American or Asian cultures to become your identity. They are hard to mingle with for sure. Particularly the concept of "And, Or" made me do some deep thinking. These two words are very simple, but can hold a lot of meaning with a closer look. Essentially, "And" is inclusion while "Or" is the opposite: exclusion/separation. As the producer explained, that goes hand in hand with the modern world's views on culture.

At the end of the show, the producers had a panel to answer questions on the stage. I was assigned to hold a microphone to give to guests if they had any questions. It required me to run down the auditorium to the people who would congratulate the production and give their own comments to the producers while I listened and learned. Afterward, the event concluded and Ms. Hassan expressed her gratitude. It was such a great experience to be able to be an integral part of a public event like this. Together, with the Asia Society staff, we made sure that this professional event went steadily and I'm glad that I could help out and refine my public skills in the process.
