Learning Outcome 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in a fieldwork experience.

This Saturday I had the opportunity to volunteer at Asia Society's annual Lunar Festival Celebration which was hosted in their own building. The event had a number of activities, ranging from arts and crafts, live performances, and the famous dragon dance in the plaza. As with last week's blog, this event really strengthened my connection to Asia Society, and I'm glad I agreed to do it. However, there are some key things I learned today regarding perseverance.

I was assigned the task of helping to "print" buttons in the Houston Public Library event bus; an activity that was very popular among the children. The task in itself was simple, operate a button printer of sorts and guide the children to make their own creations to immortalize in a button. However, the volunteer who was assigned with me made it very difficult to focus. In all politeness, this young man who was my age, decided to abandon the job, distract me with his phone, challenged me repeatedly to arm wrestle, and said inappropriate things to the young children in front of us. It was nearly unbearable, and I had to focus on two things; doing the actual job and asking him to assist me. But it did not work, and I had to finish my four hours doing the job by myself. I'm not complaining, the work was manageable by myself, however, I really wish he could have aided me in making the job easier. I learned a valuable lesson today, work won't always be what you expect, there are always unforeseen obstacles and you have to adapt and persevere through them. Despite that, I had a great time and am looking forward to volunteering at future events!
