Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
This week I had a great idea to help out my job by using my talents in another way. Social media outreach. Truthfully, being active on social media nowadays is more of a negative thing rather than a positive, however, in the lens of business, it is a great way to reach a large mass of potential future customers. Because my restaurant's social media activity has been minimal in the last few years, I came up with a proposal to manage all the accounts for the various socials (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc.) as both a hobby I enjoy and a way to highlight the food. Instead of the dull captions and poor-quality pictures, I would use catchy messages and vibrant pictures to give a truer perspective of what we do there. As screens and social media prominently dominate the modern world nowadays, the best marketing is done online. I already have had somewhat experience working at Asia Society's Education and Outreach department, as well as the knowledge that most big brand companies hire interns to handle their social media accounts. It was doable.
Before I approached my boss about this, I was unsure that my talents would be put to good use, or that I would have the time to manage multiple accounts along with my school work and job. This wasn't part of the job description I had applied for and would not yield any better monetary compensation regardless. So why was I doing this? After some self-reflection, I came to the conclusion that once again I am doing this job for the experience of a professional workplace, and that includes an online presence nowadays. So, without the reward of anything other than enjoying a supposedly "addictive hobby," I am now soon going to be making outreach for Samurai Noodle much easier. I'm glad I was able to put my talents to good use, and I'm excited to help support this community!
